Quinzhees and Snow Castles
Saturday, January 28, 1-3 pm
Quinzhees were used by Alaska's Athabascan people who lived in the interior, where the snow was not suited for building igloos. Used for winter camping, survival purposes, or just for fun, a quinzhee can be constructed by gathering a large pile of snow and excavating the inside. This program will explain the process of constructing digging out a quinzhee. And for fun, help our instructors make an ice castle. Meet: MooseWood Nature Center. Fee: $3/child, $5/adult, or $15/family. Audience: Families
Critter Feeding
Saturday, January 21, 2 pm
Learn about, feed, and see the animals eat at MooseWood! Meet: MooseWood Nature Center. Fee: Suggested donation $5. Audience: All ages welcome.
Steve Todey, explorer, photographer and producer, made a video introduction to MooseWood Nature Center. View it, along with other videos about Marquette, at Steve's ExploringYourPlanet.com website.
Snowshoeing was once the mode of snow travel used in North America. Snowshoes were used by hunters, trappers, farmers, timber cruisers, surveyors, prospectors, explorers, and soldiers. To travel in snow country snowshoes were either owned or they were made up until about a hundred years ago.
Now, snowshoeing is a popular sport affording great outdoor fun, low impact exercise and is a wonderful way to experience Presque Isle Park’s winter wonderland. If you can walk, you can snowshoe.
MooseWood Nature Center has an assortment of Tubbs and Sherpa snowshoes available for rent to adults and youth. Rental rates are $5/day, $8/weekend (3 days), and $15/week (7 days). Members of MooseWood Nature Center rent snowshoes for free. Snowshoes are available on a first come first served basis or call 906-228-6250 for availability.
